Boiler, Furnace and Pipe Insulation Removal in Minneapolis

Typical cost in Minneapolis

  • Pipe insulation in a basement, about 50 to 150 ft of pipe$1,400 – $4,300+
  • Duct wrap and tape in one basement or crawl space$1,400 – $4,300+
  • Old boiler or octopus furnace with its insulation and nearby pipe$4,300 – $11,500+

A Minneapolis basement can still hold a boiler, steam or hot-water pipes, or an old octopus furnace wrapped in white insulation. MDH lists each of these among home products that may contain asbestos. Once a lab confirms it, we strip the wrap so your heating contractor can repair or replace the system.

More than 10 linear feet of friable insulation on pipes is work for an MDH-licensed contractor under state law. We work in basements across Minneapolis, Columbia Heights and St. Anthony.

What we remove

Boiler jackets and steam pipes

Replacing the whole boiler? Then every insulated pipe and fitting in the way of the new unit has to be bare before your plumber makes a single cut. We soak the wrap, cut it free a short length at a time and seal each piece in a bag.

Octopus furnace ducts

The wide ducts that branch out from an old round furnace can be wrapped in insulation, and the furnace body may be covered as well. Each layer is sampled before removal.

Duct tape and register boots

The white tape on duct seams and register boots is a separate material from the pipe wrap. A lab result for one tells you nothing about the other, so the tape gets its own sample.

Short sections for a repair

Even a short length is worth handing to a licensed crew. MDH points out that an amount too small to be regulated is not automatically safe.

Planning basement work

A basement job runs around the heating system and the space you have.

Heat during the job

Is the boiler still keeping the house warm? Then you, your heating contractor and our crew settle when it goes off before any plastic goes up.

A clear path

Boxes and shelves near the pipe runs or the basement stairs should be cleared first. The enclosure takes up floor space, and sealed bags have to travel out without obstacles.

Air tests at the end

Air samples are taken before the plastic comes down. You get the lab report with the rest of the job paperwork.
