Plaster and joint compound
Old plaster walls and drywall joint compound are both on MDH’s list. Opening walls for wiring, plumbing or a new layout starts with a sample of each layer.
Typical cost in Minneapolis
A kitchen gut, an addition or a teardown can disturb plaster, joint compound, window glazing, siding and roofing. In Minnesota, asbestos has to be removed from a building before it is renovated or demolished, and that includes homes. We clear the work area first, so your remodeler or wrecking crew starts on clean material.
We take on remodel and teardown abatement across Minneapolis, Columbia Heights and St. Anthony.

Window glazing, siding and roofing can contain asbestos. MDH says roofing and siding in good condition are best left alone, so we remove only what your project will disturb.
The asbestos has to be out at least two days before the demolition date. If any is left in the part being torn down, all of the resulting debris must be handled as asbestos waste.
MPCA must get notice ten working days before anyone disturbs regulated asbestos in a commercial building or one with five or more units. Its rule leaves out houses with four units or fewer. That exclusion is lost when a house was converted from some other use, when a single owner tears down several houses, or when the job belongs to a highway, urban renewal or commercial development project.
Every demolition in Minneapolis needs a wrecking permit. If you pull it yourself as the homeowner, the city wants a licensed abatement contract or a survey showing the house needs no removal.
Hennepin County inspects homes and commercial properties before demolition. Have the asbestos survey and report, abatement receipts and disposal manifests ready for the inspector.
MDH suggests asking for the contractor’s Minnesota license, worker and supervisor certificates, the MDH permit, waste manifests and the air-sampling lab report. Get more than one bid and a written work plan.
