Popcorn and acoustic texture
The room is emptied, the floor and walls are covered, and a HEPA negative air machine keeps fibers inside the work area. The texture stays damp the whole time it comes down.
Typical cost in Minneapolis
MDH lists popcorn texture among the ceiling finishes that may contain asbestos, and a lab sample settles it for your home. When the result is positive, the room is closed off in plastic, the bumps are misted until damp and our crew scrapes them down into bags. What remains is a plain ceiling for skim coating or new drywall.
Ceilings in houses and buildings of up to four units lost their old exemption in July 2021, so more than 6 square feet of friable texture is licensed work. Ceiling jobs across Minneapolis, Columbia Heights and St. Anthony are welcome.

Paint and old water stains both affect how a textured ceiling reacts when we dampen it. We look for each one during the site visit and base the quote on what your ceiling is really like.
Older ceiling tiles are on MDH’s list as well. They are sampled and, if positive, taken down whole where possible and bagged.
Intact texture that nobody will touch can stay. The question comes back when you move a light, open the ceiling or sand it for paint.
Ceiling work goes faster in an empty room.
Take out furniture, rugs and wall hangings. Lights, fans and smoke alarms are taken down or wrapped.
The room stays closed until the air samples clear it, so plan for it to be out of use for the length of the job.
